NOTICE

The engine oil and filter change interval for standard service application is every 1000 hours when the following requirements are met: Utilize Cat Recommended Fluids Utilize Cat Filters Utilize S·O·S Services at recommended interval When these requirements are not met, the oil and filter change interval should be every 500 hours, or use S·O·S Services oil sampling and analysis program to determine an acceptable oil change interval. If you select an interval for oil and filter change that is too long, you may damage the engine.

When operating in any of the conditions or environments outlined in this Operation and Maintenance Manual, Severe Service Application, use S·O·S Services oil analysis to determine the best oil and filter change interval. When S·O·S Services are not used in severe service applications, the oil and filter change interval should be every 250 hours.. If you select an interval for oil and filter change that is too long, you may damage the engine.

Procedure for Changing Engine Oil and Filter

Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin.

Note: If the sulfur content in the fuel is greater than 1.5 percent by weight, use an oil that has a Total Base Number (TBN) of 30 and reduce the oil change interval by one-half.

Note: Drain the crankcase while the oil is warm. This allows waste particles that are suspended in the oil to drain. As the oil cools, the waste particles will settle to the bottom of the crankcase. The particles will not be removed by draining the oil and the particles will recirculate in the engine lubrication system with the new oil.

Prepare the machine for maintenance. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Prepare the Machine for Maintenance"

Crankcase drain valve
Open the crankcase drain valve. Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
Note: Discard any drained fluids according to local regulations.
Close the drain valve.

Access door
Open the access door at the right side of the machine.

Drain valve
Loosen drain valve and allow the oil to drain out of the housing. The drain valve is on the bottom of the engine oil filter housing.
Note: If equipped with a fast fill system, the oil can be drained and filled using the fast fill coupler. Refer to "Fast Fill (If Equipped)" in this chapter.

Oil filter
Remove the oil filter housing. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Oil Filter - Inspect". Dispose the used filter according to local regulations.
Remove the oil filter from the housing.
Clean the oil filter housing and the base thread.
Install the new oil filter element into the housing.
After installing the new element, hand tighten the drain valve at the bottom of the housing.

Oil filter gasket
Apply a thin coat of engine oil to the gasket of the filter. Refer to Illustration 5 for lubrication points on the gasket.
Install the filter housing with element to the filter base utilizing a socket wrench.
Note: Apply a tightening torque of 90 N·m (66 lb ft) and tighten until metal to metal contact is achieved.
Close the access door.

Access door
Open the access door on top of the machine. Refer to "Access Door and Cover Locations".

(1) Oil level gauge
(2) Oil filler cap
Remove oil filler cap (2). Fill the crankcase with new oil. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)". Clean the oil filler plug and install the oil filler plug.

NOTICE

Do not under fill or overfill engine crankcase with oil. Either condition can cause engine damage.
START the engine and allow the oil to warm. Refer to "Engine Starting". Check the engine for leaks.STOP the engine.

Oil level gauge
Wait for 30 minutes to allow the oil to drain back into the crankcase. Check the oil level with oil level gauge (1). Maintain the oil between the "L" and "H" marks on the oil level gauge (1). If necessary, add oil.
Close the access door.

Fast Fill (If Equipped)

If your machine is equipped with a deluxe service center, you may drain and add the engine oil through the fast fill port.

Access door

Open the access door on the right side of the machine.

Dust cover
Remove the dust cover.
Attach a hose that is equipped with a nozzle.
Note: Make sure that the nozzle and the receiver are free from debris before attaching.
Drain the oil or add the oil, as needed.
Install the dust cover.

Ground level oil level gauge.
Verify that the correct amount of oil was added and add or remove oil as necessary. A ground level oil level gauge is in the same compartment as the fast fill port.
