June 2003
CHANGES TO TURBOCHARGER CORE ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
This IRM is a revision to the original announced in the June 15th ePreview. The correct media number revision level for the Turbocharger Core Acceptance Criteria is SELD0028-06.
Announcement
AVSpare Remanufactured Products Group is announcing changes to the core acceptance criteria for turbochargers and cartridges (SELD0028-04). These changes have come about as a result of Cat and TEPS dealers? input, and AVSpare?s desire to establish clear criteria for easy determination of core grading category.
Effective with cores inspected at Cat® core inspection facilities on July 1, 2003, the newly revised core acceptance criteria eliminates the penalty for partial core refund due to Non-Operational Damage caused by hammer blows or chisel marks. Cores containing hammer and chisel marks will now qualify for full core refund. This eliminates grading category uncertainty. However, cores that have torch marks that have melted the housings on turbos and cartridges, or cores that have broken flanges or housings due to mishandling, will continue to receive partial core credit. Discrepancy code NOPR should be used for cores with torch marks or mishandling damage.
In addition, dealers will now receive full core refund when there is damage to the turbine wheel resulting from wheel rub. However, turbine wheels that are cracked, broken, or bent to the extent that it is visible without disassembly would continue to qualify for damaged core refund. On the CCR form, use DWHL as the discrepancy code to report damage to the turbine wheel.
The new core acceptance criteria continues to use the same visual inspection with a
flashlight, and requires no disassembly of turbocharger groups. This new criteria provides
clearer guidelines for core inspection.
