If you suspect that the coolant temperature sensor is inaccurate, perform the following procedure:
Note: Ensure that the coolant level is at the correct level before performing this test.
- Turn off the engine.
- Allow the engine to cool.
- Relieve the system pressure. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "System Pressure Release" for the detailed procedure to release the system pressure.
- Drain the coolant.
- Remove plug (1) from the regulator housing.
- Install Tooling T2.
Use a Tooling T3, T4, and 5P-2721 Nut to connect the Tooling T2
- Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
Note: Ensure that the coolant level is at the correct level before performing this test.
- Start Cat ET and multitool.
- Start and run the engine until the temperature reaches the desired range according to the multi tool thermometer.
- Monitor the coolant temperature on Cat ET. Monitor the coolant temperature on the multi tool thermometer.
- Compare the coolant temperature on Cat ET to the coolant temperature on the multi tool thermometer. If the two measurements are about equal, the sensor is okay. If the two measurements are not about equal, there may be a problem with the sensor. Install a new sensor and verify that the problem is resolved.
