C280 Marine and Petroleum Engines Exhaust Bypass Valve - Adjust

The exhaust bypass valve is preset at the factory. However, adjustments may be necessary due to the following circumstances:

  • One valve or both valves are replaced.

  • Incorrect adjustment of a valve is suspected.

The exhaust bypass valve has a set screw which functions as a full travel stop for the butterfly valve.

Note: Important that the bypass valves on both turbochargers have the same set screw gap in order to match the turbocharger speeds approximately.

Preferred Method of Adjustment is at Rated Load

  1. Load the engine to 100% rated load and speed in order to establish an air intake manifold pressure.

    Note: The target air intake manifold pressure at rated load is 280 +/- 2.5 kPa.

  2. If the target air intake manifold pressure is not met, loosen the jam nut and adjust the set screw. This action will adjust the gap between the set screw and the armature. Refer to Table 1 for the adjustment guide.

  3. After the adjustment is completed, tighten the jam nut to 47 ± 9 N·m (34.7 ± 6.6 lb ft).

    Note: Make equal adjustments to both set screws.

  4. Install a new lock wire and tamper resistant band.

Procedure for when Rated Load Cannot be Applied

  1. Measure the gap between the set screw and the armature on the valve that is being replaced.

  2. On the new part, loosen the jam nut and adjust the set screw to create the measured gap.

  3. After the adjustment is completed, tighten the jam nut to 47 ± 9 N·m (34.7 ± 6.6 lb ft).

    Note: Make equal adjustments to both set screws.

  4. Install a new lock wire and tamper resistant band.

Procedure for when Rated Load Cannot be Applied and the Part Being Replaced has been Discarded.

  1. With the engine off, verify the gap between the set screw and the armature is the correct gap. Refer to Table 2 for the correct gap for the engine rating.

  2. On the new part, loosen the jam nut and adjust the set screw to create the correct gap.

  3. After the adjustment is completed, tighten the jam nut to 47 ± 9 N·m (34.7 ± 6.6 lb ft).

  4. Install a new lock wire and tamper resistant band.

  5. Verify that the bypass valves on both turbochargers have the same set screw gap.
