Tuning

The reason for using the Three60 Precision Control System is to position the vessel precisely, such as driving laterally to dock the vessel. When the joystick is moved to port or starboard, the system moves the vessel as directed, without undue movements in other directions. Wind and currents will also affect movement.

The system must be tuned to help the system “learn” how the thrust of each drive element affects motion. During the tuning process you are directed to move the vessel laterally starboard and port to tune the joystick at the 30% and 100% starboard and port positions.

Maneuvering During Tuning

If at any time during this procedure you find that you must reposition the vessel for safe operation, press and release the joystick "Station Select" button twice or take command of the system at a power train station.

The following window is displayed when you take command at a joystick station to maneuver the vessel as required to continue the tuning procedure.

To return to tuning mode:

  1. Take control at the joystick station where tuning was active.

  2. Press and release the joystick station "Station Select" button. The message above is displayed briefly before returning to the point at which the tuning process was interrupted.

Note: If a problem is detected during the tuning process, the above message is displayed. Exit tuning and correct the problem before continuing.

Tuning

To tune the Three60 Precision Control System, perform the following procedure.

  1. Connect the appropriate cable to J4 (for RS232) or J10 (RS485) and the USB port of your computer.

    Note: The laptop must be located such that the screen is visible from the joystick station where tuning is to be performed.

    Note: If thruster panels are installed, the RS485 connection can be made at a panel.

    Note: The support tool must not be launched until after the cable is connected from J4 of the Joystick Control to the computer's USB port, the Joystick Control is powered, and one Joystick station is active and in command.

  2. Turn on the system and position the vessel so that you have a stationary point of reference against which to gauge the tuning process and to provide adequate space for maneuvering.

  3. Launch the support tool.

  4. Log in.

  5. Take control of the joystick station where tuning is to be performed.

  6. Click System Tune. The above support tool tuning screen is displayed.

  7. Click “CONTINUE”. The above window is displayed.

    • Clicking “Yes” starts the tuning process using tuning data stored in the Joystick Control.

    • Clicking “No” starts the tuning process without using any stored tuning data.

  8. Click either “Yes” or “No”. The above screen is displayed.

  9. Press and hold the “Station Select” button until prompted. The screen changes when communications between the support tool and the Joystick Control has been established as shown above.

  10. Release the joystick “Station Select” button as directed. The above window is displayed.

    You are now ready to tune starboard 30% joystick position set point. When set, this setting ensures that the boat moves straight starboard when the joystick is moved fully to starboard as directed.

    As indicated, the vessel will move when the joystick is moved toward the indicated direction. Ensure that adequate clearance around the vessel is available.

  11. Move the joystick fully to starboard and note the initial movement of the vessel for the first few seconds. The above screen is displayed.

  12. Rotate and move the joystick fore and aft as required to compensate for the initial movement, but do not try to compensate for the steady state vessel motion.

  13. While holding the joystick in the position estimated to correct the initial motion, press and hold the “Station Select” button until prompted as shown above.

  14. Release the "Station Select" button and return the joystick to center. AVSpare recommends that the tuning adjustment saved is tested and adjusted, if necessary, by repeating the preceding three steps. Repeat as many times as necessary to fine-tune the previously saved adjustments.

    Note: As discussed in "Maneuvering During Tuning", normal maneuvering can be entered to reorient the vessel and bring the vessel to a full stop to proceed with the tuning process.

  15. When this point is tuned to your satisfaction, proceed to the next point by pressing and releasing the "Station Select" button while the joystick is centered. The above window is displayed.

    You are now ready to tune port 30% joystick position set point. When set, this setting helps ensure that the boat moves straight port when the joystick control is moved fully to port.

    As indicated, the vessel will move when the joystick is moved toward the indicated direction. Ensure that adequate clearance around the vessel is available.

  29. When this final point is tuned to your satisfaction, press and release the "Station Select" button while the joystick is centered. The preceding window is displayed.

    As this window indicates, you can either:

    • Refine or test the tuned points by repeating the procedure for one or more set points by pressing and releasing the Station Select button. Proceed to the appropriate step of this procedure.

    • Save the tuning data to the Joystick Control by pressing and holding the Station Select button. During the hold, the data save process completes and the tuning window closes automatically, displaying the support tool window.

When data has been successfully saved, the control notifies you with the preceding screen before the control ends the tuning session.

If the tuning data could not be saved, then the preceding message is displayed. As indicated, default tuning data will be used. Contact support for help in identifying why tuning failed.

Calibration

Joystick Station Calibration

Perform calibration at initial installation, when the joystick is replaced, and when the joystick configuration is changed in the support tool.

  1. Place the system in leverhead mode. All joystick stations are inactive in this mode.

  2. Center the joystick to be calibrated.

  3. Center the joystick and press and hold the Station Select button until the LEDs flash rapidly (about 20 seconds). Ignore any initial flashing during the first few seconds of the action that indicates a station activation may be attempted.

    Note: Note: When the joystick is not within the allowed center point range, a flash code is displayed indicating the fault.

  4. Release the Station Select button. This stores the current joystick position as the new center point.

  5. Move the joystick to the following positions and hold in position briefly. The order is not important but the joystick must be moved to each position.

    • Full starboard

    • Full port

    • Full ahead

    • Full astern

    • Full clockwise rotation

    • Full counterclockwise rotation

  6. Center the joystick. Calibration is complete.

Lever Calibration

Perform the following procedure to calibrate a lever head. Lever head calibration is typically performed at installation only. If the lever head goes out of calibration, the fault is usually the result of another problem. Recalibration can be performed as part of a problem solution, but if the lever head drifts out of calibration again or cannot be calibrated, the lever head should be replaced.

  1. Ensure that the levers are at the neutral detent position.

  2. Power up the controls attached to the lever head and select the station at the lever head to be calibrated.

  3. Press and hold the station select button for 20 seconds. After 20 seconds, the station active LEDs and the neutral LEDs flash rapidly.

  4. Release the station select button. The neutral LEDs turn off, the station active LEDs remain on.

  5. Move the levers being calibrated to the full forward position, then press and hold the station select button. After 5 seconds, the neutral LEDs flash.

  6. Release the station select button.

  7. Move the levers to the forward detent, then press and hold the station select button. After 5 seconds, the neutral LEDs flash.

  8. Release the station select button.

  9. Move the levers to the reverse detent, then press and hold the station select button. After 5 seconds, the neutral LEDs flash.

  10. Release the station select button.

  11. Move the levers to full reverse, then press and hold the station select button. After 5 seconds, the neutral LEDs flash rapidly.

  12. 12. Release the station select button.

    If a calibration point is out of range after the station select button has been held for 5 seconds, the neutral LEDs flash rapidly. In this case, no calibration points are saved. In this event, something may be wrong with the lever head, the station harness, or the control. When the button is released.

  13. Move the levers to the neutral detent to end the calibration process.
