C4.4 and C7.1 Engines Fuel Pressure Problem Caterpillar

Fuel Pressure Problem
`
1.1. Probable Causes
2.1. Recommended Actions

Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot abnormal pressure in the low-pressure fuel system or if any of the following diagnostic trouble codes are active. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Diagnostic Trouble Codes" for information about the codes.

Table 1
Diagnostic Trouble Codes
CDL Code  Code Description  Comments
E198 (1)  Low Fuel Pressure : Level 1  The fuel pressure at the secondary fuel filter outlet pressure sensor is less than 190 kPa (27.5 psi)
No E390 or E1129 event codes are active.
The code is logged.
E390 (1)  Fuel Filter Restriction : Level 1  The secondary fuel filter is partially blocked.
No 289 or 460 codes are active.
The code is logged.
E390 (2)  Fuel Filter Restriction : Level 2  The secondary fuel filter is blocked.
No 289 or 460 codes are active.
The code is logged.
Engine power is derated.
E1129 (1)  Fuel Filter (suction side) Restriction : Level 1  The primary fuel filter is partially blocked.
No 2247 codes are active.
The code is logged.
E1129 (2)  Low Fuel Rail Pressure : Level 2  The primary fuel filter is blocked.
No 2247 codes are active.
The code is logged.
Engine power is derated.

Probable Causes

  • Restricted low-pressure fuel lines

  • Blocked primary or secondary fuel filter

Recommended Actions

Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in order.

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Check the Fuel Lines for Restrictions

A. If equipped, make sure that the fuel isolation valve is fully open.

B. Check all fuel lines between the fuel tank and the high-pressure fuel pump for restrictions or damage.

Restrictions

Result: The fuel isolation valve is not fully open.

Repair: Move the fuel isolation valve to the fully open position.

Use the electronic service tool to check that any event codes are no longer active.

Result: There is a restriction in a fuel line.

Repair: Clear the restriction or replace the fuel line.

Use the electronic service tool to check that any event codes are no longer active.

Result: The fuel isolation valve is fully open and there are no restrictions in the fuel lines.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Check for Active Event Codes

A. Use the electronic service tool to check for event codes listed in Table 1.

Event codes

Result: Event code E1129-X is active.

Repair: Replace the primary fuel filter element. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for further information.

Result: Event code E390-X is active.

Replace the secondary fuel filter element. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for further information.

Result: Event code E198-1 is active.

Replace the high-pressure fuel pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injection Pump - Remove" and Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injection Pump - Install".

If the procedure did not correct the fault, contact the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
